Maria making a mockery of her own endorsement

The full text of the St. Louis American endorsement of Maria Chappelle-Nadal reads as follows:

Maria Chappelle-Nadal has six years of experience in Jefferson City and is a proven, stalwart progressive battler. Her youthful energy also gives her the edge over Joe Adams, the only other candidate in this race who is free of the taint of major funding by Rex Sinquefield. While we have some concern for her, at times, brash behavior and penchant for picking fights she doesn't need, we feel she has learned some painful lessons in this regard. It is with raised expectations that we endorse MARIA CHAPPELLE-NADAL IN THE 14TH DISTRICT.

It's amusing that the St. Louis American would qualify their endorsement with a note of concern, because that concern is well-warranted.

I pointed out in my most recent diary, Rep. Chappelle-Nadal completely altered the American's endorsement to say that she was the only person in the race who had not received contributions from Rex Sinquefield. Even if that were true, that's not what the newspaper's endorsement said. The endorsement expressly stated that Joe Adams also has not received contributions from Sinquefield. And Chappelle-Nadal's claim in the mailer, independent of the fact that she falsely attributed the claim to the St. Louis American, is simply not true as far as I can tell. Sinquefield didn't contribute to Adams in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, or 2010. So naturally I felt pretty comfortable calling someone who completely misrepresented facts a liar.

Understandably, Maria Chappelle-Nadal was not happy to be called out for lying. I received a number of e-mails from Chappelle-Nadal expressing her disappointment and telling me that I was incorrect, but when I requested evidence to the contrary, she was not forthcoming in specifics. The only thing she was willing to say was that Sinquefield money paid for an Adams mailer back in 2006 (I'm assuming during his last re-election campaign for University City mayor), but when I requested a copy of the mailer in question, or contact info for a person who had a copy, I was told only that she wasn't going to do my research for me. The last e-mail I got from her stated that a formal announcement from the AFT concerning the mailpiece would be forthcoming, and that I should expect to hear from her attorney.

Back to that St. Louis American endorsement. Can anyone have confidence that Chappelle-Nadal has learned "painful lessons" in regards to her "brash behavior" and "picking needless fights"? The easiest thing for her to do would have been to send me a scan of mailer that allegedly was paid for by Sinquefield along with some evidence that it was indeed paid for with Sinquefield money, or put me in touch with someone who could provide that information, and I would have gladly posted an update.  Instead, I got the threat of legal action.

Now, as a state senator, it's not enough to be right on the issues. It's not enough to make a nice red meat progressive speech, as I've seen Chappelle-Nadal do on more than one occasion. These are all well and good, but you've got to cobble together coalitions with allies who have been with you for a long time as well as allies that might only be with you on that day, or else you're not going to get much done. This is doubly true in the State Senate, which is much smaller than the General Assembly. Given this personal interaction with Chappelle-Nadal, I have a hard time believing she's going to be an effective legislator for the citizens in the Missouri's 14th Senate District.

Don't your your hole any deeper. (0.00 / 0)
Since I live in Columbia and don't have a dog in this fight, let me make a few observations.

You can't say someone is lying just because you couldn't verify their statement. You have to prove that they are willfully trying to deceive.  You have no evidence she's done that.  Just because you couldn't find a connection between Joe Adams and Sinquefield does not mean she is a liar.  Also you can't expect someone to provide you "proof" when you make possible libelous statements against them.  Hence the legal action threat.

You should just reported the fact that you didn't find a connection and asked Chappelle-Nadal to back up her statement.

What I know of Chappelle-Nadal through DFA is that she is accessible and quite passionate. As for her brash behavior, at least she didn't say that hunger was a great motivator for kids.

However,  she states that the AFT is going to release a statement.  I would just wait and see.

I should just add that when a politician makes a false statement that (0.00 / 0)
disadvantages an opponent (and the contrary information was easily available in the St. Louis American article she actually quoted- or rather misquoted since she altered the quote), then it is not hard to conclude that they are lying.

Doesn't look to me like Clark's the one digging the hole deeper ... (0.00 / 0)
he's just reporting what has happened and while it may be unpleasant for Chappelle-Nadal to be challenged like this, it's hard to consider anything Clark has said to be by any measure a libel - he, after all, backs up every contention he makes, and he has been very clear that he has been more than willing to revisit the extent of Sinquefield's contributions if Chappelle-Nadal can really substantiate her main contention that she and she alone is the only candidate in her race that is free of the dreaded Sinquefield taint. Clark tried to do it and couldn't.

Of course, one can only wonder why, instead of throwing a temper-tantrum at Clark, Chappelle-Nadal didn't just do that - although there is no way to "fix" her distortion of the St. Louis American quote which is unequivocal. At this point, no matter what the AFT says, she has certainly shown that she has really poor judgment - on may levels.

This is horrible advice (0.00 / 0)
First, she clearly did lie.  Read the editorial and then read her flyer.  She modified the quote to exclude Adams and that is a lie.  There is simply no question about this fact.

AFT can release a statement all they want, but AFT isn't the arbiter here--the Missouri Ethics Commission is. Either an expenditure for Adams with a direct tie to Sinquefeld can be demonstrated or it cannot.   If she knows of this expenditure, she can direct him to it and Eric will issue a correction.  Instead of doing that, she has threatened him with legal action, but provided no evidence for her claim.

If Eric were to retract the claim--one made by another newspaper, he could be defaming Joe Adams.

The ball is entirely in her court to demonstrate such a flyer exists and was paid for by Sinquefeld.  If she cannot do that, she's lying again. If she can, she gets her correction.

Regardless of all of this, Maria lied about the editorial on her flyer.  Even if such a flyer exists, she cannot say the American said something it did not.

A lie.. (0.00 / 0)
is when someone willfully tries to deceive.  This hasn't been proven.  The onus is on the reporter to provide that proof.  Sure the MEC reports might not show a direct contribution to Adams.  However there are many continuing committees that can run ads against a candidate without ties to the campaign committee.  The Republican 24th legislative, for example, ran ads against Chris Kelly here in Boone County.  Checking that committee, I found where the money was being funneled from.  You might have jumped the gun on this.

Yeah (0.00 / 0)
We're all aware of continuing committees here, especially Rex's use of them.

It is beyond question that Maria altered the text of the American endorsement to mean something very different than what they originally wrote. So she lied about what they wrote.

In the mailer, Maria used that false claim to back up her false statement that she's the only candidate not to receive money from Sinquefield. She didn't cite an MEC report, a real and not made up media report, a release from an organization, or anything else.

Another thing. You're asking me to prove a negative. I've made a good faith search of the MEC records, including continuing committees, to see if any money could be traced from Rex to Adams. None exists that I've seen, and believe me, I've looked. I've asked Maria to provide documentation many times now to show me exactly what I got wrong, and I have stated publicly that I would be glad to retract my statement if it is proved to be false. To this point nothing has surfaced.
