Did freshman Democratic representatives Margo McNeil, Florissant, and Jill Schupp, Creve Coeur, even serve in the same legislature this year? It doesn't sound like it when they describe their committee experiences. They and two other freshman Democratic women from the St. Louis area--Vicki Englund, South St. Louis County, and Jeanne Kirkton, Webster Groves--spoke Monday at the West County Dems meeting about the committees they served on. McNeil loved the Health Care committee she served on because it actually got some useful legislation passed.
Schupp's experience was less .... no, you have to hear Jill, with her wry sense of humor, tell you what it was like:
Question: Was the Republican behavior that Vicki Englund saw in committee more flagrantly unprofessional than what Schupp experienced? Judge for yourself (below the fold).
By the way, Englund misquoted the name of the bill at the beginning of her remarks: She called it the "government get off my back act" and that's what it should have been called, but Republicans called it the "small business get off my back act." Englund pointed out to the Republican committee members that their title sounded like they wanted small business off their backs. That was not what they meant, they assured her--but they didn't change the name of the bill. They were not only too inept to phrase their satire without a Democrat's help, but also too careless to change it. Hmm. Bloggers at this site have been known to mock Republicans, but really, the Rs are capable of doing that to themselves without our help.
The final speaker, Jeanne Kirkton, struck a balance between McNeil's optimism and the disgust that Schupp and Englund expressed. Kirkton enjoyed her committee work, but she also discovered that she had to keep an eye on those tricky critters she was serving with.
