Ironically, one of the people who commented on your other thread -- someone who criticized me and the Post-Dispatch for allowing this discussion -- made my point better than I did. He said:

As a child and through my whole adult life I have been taught/told that we have an obligation to object to racist and cruel talk.

That's exactly right. Stand up to it. Don't let it pass. Don't ignore it. In my newsroom, we have an obligation to monitor the discussion and respond as fast as possible to abusive remarks. But closing our ears to thoughts and ideas that make us uncomfortable? How does that help?

That you're not really fostering a discussion.

The article in question wasn't about race. It was about PDA, and happened to have an interracial couple pictured. So a bunch of racist commenters jumped on and started ranting about miscegenation. A bunch of other commenters entering the same forum and decrying their racist comments won't make them change their mind, nor will it start a reasonable discussion about interracial marriages.

Now, the conversation was stopped in that post and directed to another place, where the same characters repeated the same arguments for 159 comments. Did anything reasonable come out of it? Does anyone feel any better because they're forced to put up with people who don't believe that two people of different racial backgrounds should be affectionate in public?

I have.  You can provide a forum for this garbage, but you cannot be bothered to do original reporting on white supremacy that continues to infect Saint Louis.  Why is that?
